Jade Shutes: How aromatherapy helped me overcome trauma

A transformative discovery
Although it was a painful experience that led to Jade discovering the power of essential oils, the discovery changed her life for the better.
While suffering from severe back pain that left her unable to walk in the 1990s, Jade’s friend referred her to an aromatherapist. “The British approach to aromatherapy was and is through the application of essential oils (in a carrier oil) via massage. My first aromatherapy session was life transforming! First off, I fell in love with the aroma of the blend she customised for me. At some point during the massage, I fell fast asleep, and upon waking, the first thought I had was, THIS is what I want to do for the rest of my life! I wanted to give others this transformative experience.”
And she has! Jade studied at the Raworth Institute in the UK, and from there, she went on to open one of the first aromatherapy schools in North America.
Thirty-two years later, she’s still enthralled and fascinated by the power of essential oils and aromatherapy.
Using essential oils to make life better
Like so many aromatherapists, Jade uses aromatherapy products whenever and wherever she can. “I love making aromatherapy products for myself and my family for skin care, muscular aches, pains, or emotional ups and downs. I love diffusing essential oils into our home to support health and emotional well-being. I also make my own aromatic medicine.”
Using essential oils in a massage is also a favourite of hers as it’s so supportive of physical and emotional well-being. She also likes integrating essential oils in an aromatic spritzer at the end of yoga practice or to diffuse during meditation.
She says that “essential oils can fit into just about any practice in one way or another, given their wide range of therapeutic benefits.”
A favourite oil revealed
According to Jade, it’s a tough ask to choose just one essential oil, but at the end of the day, neroli comes out on top.
She adds that “neroli has a way of evoking a sense of calm like no other essential oil. Sweet, floral, subtle yet powerful, neroli reduces feelings of stress or overwhelm while comforting the heart, especially during these times of change.”
Jade’s essential oil dos and don’ts
With such a wealth of knowledge, Jade certainly has some words of wisdom for anyone new to essential oils.

- Build a relationship with each oil and learn how to use it properly

- Buy too many essential oils upfront
- Use any oil without knowing a few basic facts about it
She added that there is an abundance of great books on the topic and recommends The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils by Kurt Schnaubelt and The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood.
